Un-cruise adventure: 4 Rivers wine cruise

Here we go! Along come Kenny and Lily, a Victorian couple who take us back to 1898 for our introduction to the SS Legacy, our Victorian replica river boat steamship home for the next week! Captain Scott and crew are all lined up to greet us as we board.

We are 41 people on this voyage down the Columbia and Snake Rivers. Immediately we meet new friends, single ladies and couples most of whom are all on their first Un-Cruise adventure.

As we steam out of Portland on the Willamette River, we are passing a happy bachelorette group on an aqua version of a self-pedaling bar, as we head away from the sunset towards the Columbia River.

Dinner is delicious, sublime herb-flavoured Pacific cod in a light crispy crust, paired with local Oregon wine.

We drop anchor about 10PM and go to sleep in our spacious cabin equipped with 2 comfortable twin beds and plenty of storage space.


Sunday, June 19
WE start this morning with Yoga at 7AM on the back of the boat as we cruise along through the Columbia Gorge. Glennda gets distracted by the beautiful scenery as she snaps away with her new camera. There was a little nip in the air with patches of fog still clinging to the sides of the gorge.
After stoking up with a hearty breakfast we are ready to board the coach to Multnomah Falls. A short walk up to feel the mist and take loads of pictures and just gaze at this spectacular sight.
Now we’re on to Spring House Cellar Winery for a beautiful wine tasting presentation. As our coach climbs uphill to the next winery, nestled between Snow covered Mount Hood and Mount Adams we are all very thankful for this beautiful clear sunny day. It’s warm enough for us to sit outside on the terrace. For lunch and more tastings. Mount Hood Winery won Oregon’s 2016 Winery of the Year and clearly we are all impressed with the wine as we queue up to buy bottles to bring home.
Back on the boat and there on our cabin door is a sign to come on down for our complimentary massage. As we sit in the hot tub afterwards Glennda spots a bald eagle.
Dinner is local salmon or rack of lamb. Since we can’t decide, the very amenable Anila lets us order half of each! There is no real entertainment on board but enjoyed a very interesting talk about Lewis and Clark.

Another beautiful day! We have arrived at the Snake River in Washington and are on the coach to Walla Walla passing through rich, fertile, desert terrain. We see fields of Milo, grain, fruit and of course grapes, all being irrigated with fresh river water. Apples are being grown espalier style, trained like grapes on vines, easier to maintain and harvest.
This land was once home to the Cayuse Indians who eventually lost patience with the Oregon Trail pioneers and instigated the Whitman Mission massacre. This sad event in 1847 marked the beginning of the Indian wars.
Visited 2 different but equally interesting wineries. Stunning Basel Cell winery in the rolling hills and Dunham Cellars in a converted hangar at Walla Walla airport.


Tuesday, June 21
Love this day as I am so ready for a non winery. We hike around Palouse National Park in Washington. Some say the Palouse Falls are the best in the state. The geology of the basalt stratas are explained. They look like giant terraces and carved columns where the cliff swallows make their mud nests.
We return to the boat for swimming, very refreshing in 70 * water temp. Julio has given all the dining room stewards time off so they entertain as they perform double flips off the top deck.
